Teachers can provide one of the strongest, and most positive, role models children are exposed to. I applaud the AATF program for their work to expand the number of African American teachers in our local public schools.

Roberta Salisbury

Roberta Salisbury

Roberta Salisbury completed her Junior year at Virginia Union University in Richmond in May. She has taken on many leadership roles in addition to her course work and is making a difference within the community. Roberta has been part of the Track and Field program as a captain; she was President of the Spanish Club and President of Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society for Education majors. She also volunteered to tutor her classmates in Spanish and now she tutors in math and reading at the Douglas L. Wilder Middle School. Roberta loves working with and teaching students, for example she volunteers to coach track at Wilder Middle School and she is a Resident Assistant at Virginia Union University.

Roberta believes that, "Learning is very important and to have a teacher that wants to motivate and encourage students is going to effect whether or not the student excels higher. The greatest feeling is to know that a student wants my help when they are struggling and to know that I can assist them. I encourage the students to challenge themselves and it is amazing to see the look in their eyes when they succeed.

"Being able to be a part of student lives and making a difference is giving me confidence to continue to make dreams come true. I was inspired by other teachers and I believe that I am going to inspire other students to be successful."
