Applicants must have completed two years of undergraduate coursework (or sixty credit hours) and be enrolled in an accredited education program approved by the Virginia State Department of Education. A person who has completed an undergraduate degree in a program other than education and is enrolled in an approved education program working toward licensure (such as a master’s degree in teaching) in the state of Virginia is also eligible to apply to AATF.
Each applicant must have at least a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and a GPA of 3.0 in education courses or in the academic major.
The qualifications for becoming a Teaching Fellow are stringent. A committee of local educators and AATF board members screens and interviews applicants. The committee considers a number of criteria, including GPA, a writing sample, extracurricular activities, references, and an interview.
